Rooted in Christ

September 29, 2010

I was asked to post the final graphic I put on the screen during my sermon on Sunday. The sermon was about how to be rooted in Christ: “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him…” (Colossians 2:6-7). The sermon should be posted on our podcast in the next couple of days, in case you weren’t there on Sunday.

There has been a good energy in worship this fall. Many have said that they’ve sensed the Spirit being powerfully present. I’ve felt that as well. I’m especially impressed with the risks some of you are taking in living this stuff out. This truly humbles and challenges me. I want to be like you. Let’s pray that God will continue to speak through each other’s words and actions as we explore what it means to “live Jesus.”

Big Problem, Bigger God

Our Job lectionary reading for today begins: “Can you pull in the leviathan with a fishhook…?” Some scholars suggest that leviathan refers to a whale, while most think that the rest of the passage points more to a crocodile. Either way, the illustration points to how much that exists and happens in this world is beyond our control. Given that, we can live in a constant state of anxiety, or we can resign as CEO and President of our lives (like we talked about on Sunday) and place our trust in the One who made all this and holds all of it together.

What is your crocodile? (more…)

A Good Beginning

September 13, 2010

It was great to see so many of you come out to the church picnic on Sunday, even with the cool weather. Personally, it was good to be able to catch up with many of you. Loved the variety of people who were there. Many signs of the Kingdom.

It was also quite moving to see so many of you come forward yesterday to remember and affirm your baptism; in particular to remember it as your funeral and burial with Christ. A good beginning to this season that we’ve named “A Time to Grow.”

Hope you’ve been able to find your “swing” this morning. (One person told me after the service, “Watching you swing that golf club reminded me of Johnny Carson.” Now, that’s a first!)

Resign, Rejoice, Refocus, Relax.

“A Time to Grow”

September 7, 2010

As most of you have heard, our BRC theme this fall is “A Time to Grow.” Granted, as full-time followers of Jesus it’s always time to grow. But there are different kinds of time, aren’t there?  The Greeks had several words for time. For example, one word for time was chronos or ordinary time, the time that’s measured by our clocks and watches. Another word was kairos. These are special times, appointed times, “pregnant” times, opportune times. Yes, it’s always time to grow, but I believe there are special times, special seasons, in which we are given unique opportunities to grow individually and as a body. (more…)
