Covenant Renewal: Spiritual Practice 3 – Develop a Personal, Conversational Relationship with God

christdoorAs we continue our journey toward Covenant Renewal Sunday, this week’s spiritual practice is “Develop a Personal, Conversational Relationship with God.” Some people might read this and think, “Ah…Christianity Light.” It’s true that some people talk about a personal relationship with Christ in a way that privatizes their faith and avoids the costly discipleship of engaging with a broken world. Yet, it is a personal, conversational relationship with God that provides the necessary direction, transformation and power for doing ministry and mission. We take Jesus at his word when he said, “Apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). canoeDuring our worship yesterday I suggested that during this next year we redefine what a “good day” is, as well as redefine the word “prosperity.” Based on Psalm 1, I challenged us to define a good day as a day when we lived God’s way rather than a day when things went our way; and that we redefine prosperity as bearing fruit (e.g. the fruit of the Spirit) instead of acquiring more ornaments, more stuff.

Of course, once we take up the challenge of living God’s way, we immediately encounter another challenge: how does one know God’s way? (more…)

God’s Guarding Guidance

Paul writes: “If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” Some versions say, “…let us also be guided by the Spirit.” Should we equate walking in the Spirit with being guided by the Spirit? Can we expect the Spirit to counsel us in all our decisions, or just the major ones? Where do we draw the line? How specific can we expect the Spirit’s guidance to be? (more…)
